The life of many Christmas gifts is short lived. After the initial excitement the novelty soon wears off and the recipient is left with another item to find space for in their home.
How about buying a gift that has the potential to get better and better as time goes on?
Not only improving itself but also enhancing its local environment. What if you could buy a gift that at the end of its life returned to the earth without leaving anything behind.
All these things are possible if you buy a tree as a gift.
This Blog post will discuss some of the benefits of buying a tree as a gift and information for how to go about it.

I have bought many trees over the years as gifts.
It gives me peace of mind to know that they are either living, beautifying their surroundings and improving air quality, or, they have decomposed and are enriching the soil.
With a little bit of consideration, you can ensure that the tree you buy will spend more time doing the former before it does the latter.

If you know the person, and the garden, who you are buying the tree for quite well it makes things a lot easier.
By knowing the type of soil, aspect, available space, shading and wind protection you can select a tree that will thrive in the space.
Also, if you have an idea of what colours or shapes appeal to the recipient then you can really narrow in on a specimen.

All is not lost if you do not have this information.
There are certain trees that will grow in a wide range of conditions and as such are safer choices.
Another option is to choose a tree that can be grown in a container. Many trees will tolerate this, including Citrus which can be handy when you want a lemon or lime to squeeze into your favorite drink.
Growing trees in containers makes it easier to control the growing environment in terms of soil and moisture and will also restrict how big a tree can get. If your friend of loved one only has a small apartment there are also Bonsais.
