How to care for your trees in Spring.

30/10/2019 by Rossy

The first tender young leaves are starting to grow. The sunny days are here. It’s safe to say that spring is on its way.

Read our Tips for Spring Tree Care.

The new growing season is a busy time for your trees as they produce flowers for pollination.

Growing new leaves ready for maximising energy gathering during the summer months.

There are certain things you can do at this time of year to support your trees during this hive of activity and plan for the summer to follow.

This Blog post will discuss measures you can take to ensure your trees get the care they need to keep them at their best.

Spring can be a great time to get out in the garden and have a good look at how things have fared over the winter months.

Check for signs of damaged branches that may have broken in storms.

As the leaves grow on the trees, look for any areas that are not flushing as well as others or for any deadwood in the canopy.

Also, make a note if any of your trees have not flowered as much as they normally would.

If you mulch your trees, spring is a good time to check how thick it is and top it up if necessary.

If you don’t have mulch on your trees, Spring is the perfect time to put some on.

Check out our “how to mulch a tree” Blog post for more information.

Adequate levels of moisture can be crucial to the healthy development of a tree.

Spring is a good time to assess the situation in your garden and take measures before the hot, dry months of summer are upon us.

The solution may be as simple as mulching. However, for particularly dry sites you may want to consider installing an irrigation system.

Or just committing to keeping an eye on things and hand watering as required.

There are clever systems out there now that can reuse the grey water from your house to use on your garden.

A quick internet search will provide you with lots of options.

You can also fertilise your trees at this time of year.

There are many ways in which this can be done, however, we would recommend using organic fertilisers.

Not only do organic fertilisers provide nutrients, they also improve the structure of the soil.

Which helps with moisture control and improves the habitat for beneficial soil organisms.

Fertilising trees is another Blog post in itself so here is a link to a good one that we found: www.thoughtco.com/basics-on-tree-fertilization

Finally, spring can be a good time to book an Arborist if you require pruning work on your trees during the summer.

Late summer pruning has less of a negative impact on trees, late summer also happens to be a busy time of year for Arborists.

If after assessing your trees, you see that pruning work needs to be done, it’s a good idea to contact your local Arborist.

Do this ahead of the time you need them so they can schedule you in.

This is especially true for our clients that manage school sites and require work to be done while the children are on holiday.

So, with all that in mind, get out and have fun in your garden.
