What is the New Zealand living wage? The Living Wage has emerged as a response to growing poverty and inequality that continues to hold back so many New Zealand workers, their families and the NZ economy. The Living Wage concept is very simple, yet such a powerful alternative – it’s the hourly wage a NZ worker needs to pay for the necessities of life and participate as an active citizen in the community.
It reflects the basic expenses of NZ workers and their families such as food, transportation, housing and childcare. The NZ Living Wage is calculated independently each year by the New Zealand Family Centre Social Policy Unit. The Living Wage rate is voluntary and for 2018 has been calculated to be $20.55 per hour, $4.05 more than the minimum wage set by the Government.
Living Wage Movement Aotearoa New Zealand brings together community/secular, union and faith-based groups to campaign for a Living Wage. To learn more visit www.livingwage.org.nz and show your support at facebook.com/LivingWageNZ
