Seasonal Tree Advice: How to Care for Trees in Spring & prepare your Garden for Summer

20/10/2020 by Jacquie

Do you need some seasonal tree advice?

The first tender young leaves are starting to grow. The sunny days are here. It’s safe to say that spring is on its way.

The new growing season is a busy time for your trees as they produce flowers for pollination. They are growing new leaves ready for energy gathering during the summer months.

There are certain things you can do at this time of year to support your trees during this hive of activity and plan for the summer to follow.

Seasonal tree advice is something our team regularly provides for customers who want to look after their trees. Now is the perfect time to make sure you are well-versed in what your garden needs at this time of year to flourish this season and beyond.

Spring is a great time to get out in the garden and have a good look at how things have fared over the winter months. What should you be looking out for?

Conducting a seasonal check-in for your trees and plants:

  • Check for signs of damaged branches that may have broken in storms
  • Look for any areas that are not flushing as well as others or for any deadwood in the canopy
  • Make a note if any of your trees have not flowered as much as they normally would
  • If you mulch your trees, spring is a good time to check how thick it is and top it up if necessary
  • If you don’t have mulch on your trees, spring is the perfect time to put some on
  • Make yourself familiar with the different pests and diseases which can wreak havoc on your landscape
  • Start thinking about moisture levels in the soil…adequate levels of moisture can be crucial to the healthy development of a tree and vary across different tree families (in terms of what they require e.g. citrus trees are very ‘thirsty’)
  • Spring is a good time to assess the situation in your garden and take measures before the hot, dry months of summer are upon us.
  • Consider installing an irrigation system for dry sites. Modern irrigation systems can use greywater and rainwater instead of valuable drinking water from the tap

Hedge Trimming Services and Tree Pruning – A Seasonal Activity

How to trim a hedge NZNow is a good time to book a professional arborist for your spring and summer tree work (eg pruning).

At this time of year, hedge trimming services and tree pruning services are commonly requested.

We all know the Xmas cleanup rush is coming but we can’t prune everyone’s trees and hedges on the 23 December! In fact, it’s actually better if we prune 6-8 weeks in advance so that the trees and hedges have a chance to bloom and recover from the process.

So, book in your work early so you know your place will look great when the family arrives.

‘Tis the season to be...proactive!

There’s literally no better time than now to get outside and prepare your garden for the spring/summer seasons so it can flourish, thrive, and achieve its full potential.

Auckland Council have some useful advice for looking after your garden at this time of year https://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/environment/plants-animals/pests-weeds/Pages/default.aspx

We also have a range of helpful blogs to reference if you would like to read more on the subject https://www.treecareauckland.co.nz/summer-tree-care/

Get out and have fun in your garden. Don’t forget to contact our team of professional arborists if you want us to assess your trees or book in your pre-Xmas prune!
